Ampelocalamus scandens is native to Guizhou Province, China, and grows at an altitude of 260-320 m. It can be used as a raw material for weaving and papermaking. In the current study, the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of A. scandens was sequenced and is reported for the first time. The complete cp sequence was 139,504 bp, include large single-copy (LSC), small single-copy (SSC), and a pair of invert repeats (IR) region of 83,103 bp, 12,813 bp, and 21,793 bp, respectively. Besides, the plastid genome comprised a total of 132 genes, including protein-coding, tRNA, and rRNA genes as 85, 39, and 8 genes, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on 28 cp genomes reveals that A. scandens is closely associated with Ampelocalamus melicoideus in Arundinarodae.

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation is a particularly attractive approach for converting the most unstable compounds in biogenic feedstocks at ambient conditions without external H-2. Here, we synthesized a variety of carbon-supported transition metal catalysts and characterized their activity for the electrocatalytic hydrogenation of a series of model compounds and pyrolysis bio-oil. Carbonyl compounds, especially aromatic aldehydes, such as furfural and benzaldehyde, are particularly inclined to hydrogenation driven by an applied current. This was verified with pure solutions of the model compounds and with pyrolysis bio-oil, where we achieved stable and steady continuous operation on Pd. When optimal catalyst composition was chosen, the conversion of benzaldehyde shifted from alcohol production (e.g., on Pd and Cu) to dimerization (e.g., on Co, Ni, and Zn). Pd and Cu were shown to offer the best compromise between reaction rates and efficiency although, in general, base metals offer similar conversions but better efficiencies than noble metals. Thus, the present work offers foundational results and guidelines for choosing the optimal metal catalyst and the applied potential for processing organic feedstocks as a function of its composition.

In this letter, an efficient one-pot asymmetric sequential reaction is achieved by organo/transition metal relay catalysis in constructing two consecutive C-C bonds, which involves enantioselective amino squaramide catalytic Mannich-type addition of pyrazolones to isatin-derived ketimines and a subsequent palladium catalyzed diastereoselective allylic alkylation of pyrazolones with allylic acetates. An array of novel pyrazolone-aminooxindole-propylene structural motifs are obtained in a high level of yield and with excellent enantio- and diastereoselectivity (up to 95% yield, >20:1 dr, >99% ee). This methodology features the formation of vicinal quarternary carbon-stereocenters, and the second all-carbon tetrasubstituted stereogenic center is induced by joint action of the achiral palladium catalysis and the chiral environment generated from the Mannich step. Moreover, the usefulness of this methodology is highlighted by converting the allylic product into the carbonyl compound.

Here in, the effects of FeSiAl particle size on the dielectric and microwave absorption properties of FeSiAl/Al2O3 composites were studied. FeSiAl/Al2O3 composites containing 18-25 mu m, 25-48 mu m, and 48-75 mu m FeSiAl particles were prepared by hot-pressed sintering based on uniformly mixed FeSiAl and Al2O3 powders. Results show that the real permittivity and the imaginary permittivity are significantly promoted with increasing FeSiAl particle size, which is ascribed to the enhanced interfacial polarization and conductance loss. In addition, the favorable matching impedance and suitable attenuation coefficient enabled the composite containing 25-48 mu m FeSiAl powder to show a minimum reflection loss of -34.4 dB at 11.7 GHz and an effective absorption bandwidth (<-10 dB) of 1.4 GHz in 11.0-12.4 GHz, when the thickness is 1.1 mm. By adjusting the thickness to 1.4 mm, the effective absorption bandwidth of the composite reaches a maximum value of 2.0 GHz in the 8.3-10.3 GHz range, indicating tunable, strong, and highly efficient microwave absorption performance. A lithium chloride catalyzed aza-Michael reaction of pyrazoles to alpha,beta-unsaturated imides has been developed. A range of aromatic and aliphatic alpha,beta-unsaturated imides are found to be suitable for the established method, providing the corresponding aza-Michael adducts in up to 93% yields. The inexpensive catalyst, good substrate tolerance, and ease of scale-up make this procedure highly practical.

Importance: treatment of dementia in individuals with comorbidities is complex, leading to potentially inappropriate prescribing (PIP). The impact of PIP in this population is unknown. Objective: to estimate the rate of PIP and its effect on adverse health outcomes (AHO). Design: retrospective cohort. Setting: primary care electronic health records linked to hospital discharge data from England. Subjects: 11,175 individuals with dementia aged over 65 years in 2016 and 43,463 age- and sex-matched controls. Methods: Screening Tool of Older Persons’ Prescriptions V2 defined PIP. Logistic regression tested associations with comorbidities at baseline, and survival analyses risk of incident AHO, adjusted for age, gender, deprivation and 14 comorbidities. Results: the dementia group had increased risk of PIP (73% prevalence; odds ratio [OR]: 1.92; confidence interval [CI]: 83-103%; P < 0.01) after adjusting for comorbidities. Most frequent PIP criteria were related to anti-cholinergic drugs and therapeutic duplication. Risk of PIP was higher in patients also diagnosed with coronary-heart disease (odds OR: 2.17; CI: 1.91-2.46; P < 0.01), severe mental illness (OR: 2.09; CI: 1.62-2.70; P < 0.01); and depression (OR: 1.81; CI: 1.62-2.01; P < 0.01). During follow-up (1 year), PIP was associated with increased all-cause mortality (hazard ratio: 1.14; CI: 1.021.26; P < 0.02), skin ulcer and pressure sores (hazard ratio: 1.66; CI: 1.12-2.46; P< 0.01), falls (hazard ratio: 1.37; CI: 1.15-1.63; P < 0.01), anaemia (hazard ratio: 1.61; CI: 1.10-2.38; P < 0.02) and osteoporosis (hazard ratio: 1.62; CI: 1.022.57; P < 0.04). Conclusion: patients with dementia frequently receive PIPs, and those who do are more likely to experience AHO. Three novel mixed ligand Zn(II) complexes {complex 1 = [Zn(L1)(2)(bpy)], complex 2 = [Zn(L2)(2)(bPY)], complex 3 = [Zn(L2)(2)(phen)], where bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline} of 4-(4-chlorobenzoyl)-2-(3-chlorophenyl)-5-methyl-2,4-dihydro-3H-pyrazol-3-one (HL1) and 4-(4-chlorobenzoyl)-5-methyl-2-(p-tolyl)-2,4-dihydro-3H-pyrazol-3-one (HL2) were synthesized and characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR, FTIR, TG-DTA, UV-Vis, elemental analysis, molar conductance and single crystal X-ray structure determination. Based on analytical and spectroscopic techniques, all the three Zn(II) complexes were found to have a distorted octahedral geometry. The ligands and the complexes were screened for antimalarial activity against plasmodium falciparum. The zinc(II) complexes showed greater antimalarial activity than their parent ligands. This study provides a phenomenological method to describe the exponential growth, saturation, and decay of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) deaths and infections via a Monte Carlo approach. The calculations connect Gompertz-type trial distributions of infected people per day with the distribution of deaths adopting two gamma distributions to account for the elapsed time that encompass the incubation and symptom onset to death periods. The analyses include death data from the USA, Brazil, Mexico, the United Kingdom (UK), India, and Russia, which comprise the four countries with the highest number of deaths and the four countries with the highest number of confirmed cases, as of August 07, 2020, according to theWorld Health Organization webpage. The Gompertz functions were fitted to the data of weekly averaged confirmed deaths per day by mapping the chi(2) values. The uncertainties, variances, and covariances of the model parameters were calculated by propagation, taking into account the standard errors of the data for each epidemiological week. The fitted functions for the average deaths per day for the USA and India have an upward trend, with the former having a higher growth rate and quite huge uncertainties. For Mexico, the UK, and Russia, the fits are consistent with a downward-sloping pattern. For Brazil we found a subtle trend down but with significant uncertainties. The USA, UK, and India data showed first peaks with higher growth rates compared with the second ones (4.2, 2.2, and 3.5 times higher, respectively), demonstrating the benefits of nonpharmacological interventions of sanitary measures and social distance flattening the secondary peaks of the pandemic. For the case of the USA, however, a third peak seems quite plausible, most likely related with the recent relaxation policies. Brazil’s data are satisfactorily described by two highly overlapped Gompertz functions with similar growth rates, suggesting a two-step process for the pandemic spreading. For the cases of Mexico and Russia single peaks with smoother slopes fitted the data satisfactorily. The 95% confidence intervals for the total number of deaths (x10(3)) predicted by the model for August 31, 2020, are 160 to 220, 110 to 130, 59 to 62, 41.3 to 41.4, 54 to 63, and 16.0 to 16.7 for the USA, Brazil, Mexico, the UK, India, and Russia, respectively. Our estimates for the point prevalences of infections are compared with some preliminary data from serological studies and/or model calculations focused on the USA, Brazil, and UK scenarios. The point prevalences and 95% confidence intervals for August 1, 2020, were estimated to be 5.7 (3.9-7.5)%, 8.9 (7.4-10.3)%, 9.3 (8.3-10.3)%, 5.7 (4.5-6.9)%, 0.9 (0.8-1.0%), and 1.2 (1.0-1.3)% for the USA, Brazil, Mexico, the UK, India, and Russia, respectively. The method represents an effective few-parameter framework to estimate the line shape of the infection curves and the uncertainties of the relevant parameters based on the actual death data of a pandemic.

The limitations of arene C-H functionalization of aryl sulfonamides containing strongly coordinating Nheterocycles were overcome using a Rh(III) catalyst. The site-selectivity of C-H carbenoid functionalization at the ortho position relative to either the sulfonamide or N-heterocycle directing groups was elegantly switched using solvents of different polarities and different additive concentrations. Importantly, sulfonamide-group-directed ortho-C-H carbenoid functionalization tolerated strongly coordinating N-heterocycles, including pyridine, pyrrole, thiazole, pyrimidine, and pyrazine. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to rationalize the reaction mechanisms and the influence of reaction polarity.
