Synthesis of methyl 4-nitro-1 \/-\/-pyrazole-3-carboxylate (C29). Fuming sulfuric acid (4 mL) was added to a solution of 4-nitro-1 \/-\/-pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid (16.0 g, 102 mmol) in methanol (200 mL), and the reaction was stirred at RT for 24 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated, and the resulting solid was partitioned between EtOAc and water. The aqueous layer was extracted twice with EtOAc, and the combined organic layers were dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo, providing C29 as a white solid. Yield: 17.1 g, 99.9 mmol, 98%. LCMS m\/z 170.0 (M-1 ).
