On cooling, the mixture was poured into water (1,500 ml), extracted with ethyl acetate (4 \u00d7 500 ml), and the combined organics washed with water (2 \u00d7 400 ml) and brine (300 ml) then dried (MgSO4). The solvent was removed under reduced pressure to afford (Z)-1-(1-methyl-4-nitro-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)-2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H-azepine as a light brown solid (50.74 g; 99%). 1H-NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) delta 8.00 (s, 1H), 5.95-5.85 (m, 2H), 3.80(s, 3H), 3.30-3.20 (m, 4H), 2.45-2.35 (m, 4H).
