A mixture of 3-methyl-4-nitro-lH-pyrazole (2.1 g, 17 mmol) and 4- methylsulfonylphenylboronic acid (5.0 g, 25 mmol), copper (II) acetate monohydrate (0.91 g, 5.0 mmol) and pyridine (0.5 g, 6.6 mmol) in DMF was stirred at 95 C under an oxygen atmosphere for 7 hours. The reaction was diluted with water, extracted with EtOAc (3x). The combined extracts were washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated. The crude product was purified by flash chromatography to give a mixture of 3 -methyl- 1 -(4- (methylsulfonyl)phenyl)-4-nitro-lH-pyrazole compound and 5 -methyl- 1 -(4-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl)-4-nitro-lH-pyrazole (1.3 g, 28%).<\/p>\n
