Formaldehyde (37% by weight, 4.5 mL, 21.18 mmol) was added followed by 10% Pd\/C (1.0 g). The reaction mixture was shaked on a Parr hydrogenator at 10 psi for 18hrs. The reaction mixture was filtered through celite to remove the catalyst and the residue washed with methanol (200 mL) and water (20 mL). The combined filtrates were evaporated in vacuo. The crude residue was triturated with methanol\/diethyl ether and the filtrate concentrated to afford a colourless oil identified as the title compound (1.1 g, 6.00 mmol, 93% yield).
