At neutral pH the in situ generated aqueous K[H<sub>2<\/sub>V<sup>V<\/sup>O<sub>4<\/sub>] reacts with ligands I and II, forming potassium salts, K(H<sub>2<\/sub>O)<sub>2<\/sub>[V<sup>V<\/sup>O<sub>2<\/sub>(bp-bhz)] <strong>5<\/strong> and K(H<sub>2<\/sub>O)<sub>2<\/sub>[V<sup>V<\/sup>O<sub>2<\/sub>(bp-fah)] <strong>6<\/strong>, while ligands III and IV give neutral complexes, [V<sup>V<\/sup>O<sub>2<\/sub>(Hbp-nah)] <strong>9<\/strong> and [V<sup>V<\/sup>O<sub>2<\/sub>(Hbp-inh)] <strong>10<\/strong>, resp. Acidification of aqueous solutions of <strong>5<\/strong> and <strong>6<\/strong> with HCl also gives neutral complexes [V<sup>V<\/sup>O<sub>2<\/sub>(Hbp-bhz)] <strong>7<\/strong> and [V<sup>V<\/sup>O<sub>2<\/sub>(Hbp-fah)] <strong>8<\/strong>, resp. Complexes <strong>1<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>4<\/strong>, upon slow aerial oxidation in methanol, convert into monooxidovanadium(<smallcap>V<\/smallcap>) complexes, [V<sup>V<\/sup>O(bp-bhz)(OMe)] <strong>11<\/strong>, [V<sup>V<\/sup>O(bp-fah)(OMe)] <strong>12<\/strong>, [V<sup>V<\/sup>O(bp-nah)(OMe)] <strong>13<\/strong> and [V<sup>V<\/sup>O(bp-inh)(OMe)] <strong>14<\/strong>, resp. All complexes were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques like FTIR, UV-visible, EPR (for complexes <strong>1<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>4<\/strong>) and NMR (<sup>1<\/sup>H, <sup>13<\/sup>C and <sup>51<\/sup>V), elemental anal., TG and single crystal x-ray diffraction (for complexes <strong>5<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>10<\/strong> and <strong>12<\/strong>). In the solid state, all complexes characterized by x-ray diffraction show the metal ion 5-coordinated in a distorted square pyramidal geometry. Complexes <strong>11<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>14<\/strong> were tested as catalysts for the one-pot three-component (ethylacetoacetate, benzaldehyde and ammonium acetate) dynamic covalent assembly, via Hantzsch reaction, using hydrogen peroxide as oxidant in solution and under solvent-free conditions. The complexes are also active catalysts for the oxidation of tetralin to tetralone with H<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>2<\/sub> as oxidant.
