Catalyst deactivation caused by the aggregation of active metal species in the reaction process poses great challenges for practical applications of supported metal catalysts in solid-liquid catalysis. Herein, we develop a hypercrosslinked polymer integrated with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) as bifunctional support to stabilize palladium in heterogeneous C-C bond formations. This polymer supported palladium catalyst exhibits excellent stability in the one-pot fluorocarbonylation of indoles to four kinds of valuable indole-derived carbonyl compounds in cascade or sequential manner, as well as the representative Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction. Investigations on stabilizing effect disclose that this catalyst displays a molecular fence effect in which the coordination of NHC sites and confinement of polymer skeleton contribute together to stabilize the active palladium species in the reaction process. This work provides new insight into the development of supported metal catalysts with high stability and will also boost their efficient applications in advanced synthesis. Electrocatalytic hydrogenation is a particularly attractive approach for converting the most unstable compounds in biogenic feedstocks at ambient conditions without external H-2. Here, we synthesized a variety of carbon-supported transition metal catalysts and characterized their activity for the electrocatalytic hydrogenation of a series of model compounds and pyrolysis bio-oil. Carbonyl compounds, especially aromatic aldehydes, such as furfural and benzaldehyde, are particularly inclined to hydrogenation driven by an applied current. This was verified with pure solutions of the model compounds and with pyrolysis bio-oil, where we achieved stable and steady continuous operation on Pd. When optimal catalyst composition was chosen, the conversion of benzaldehyde shifted from alcohol production (e.g., on Pd and Cu) to dimerization (e.g., on Co, Ni, and Zn). Pd and Cu were shown to offer the best compromise between reaction rates and efficiency although, in general, base metals offer similar conversions but better efficiencies than noble metals. Thus, the present work offers foundational results and guidelines for choosing the optimal metal catalyst and the applied potential for processing organic feedstocks as a function of its composition.

Aerobic organisms must rely on abundant intracellular thiols to reductively protect various vital functional units, especially ubiquitous zinc(II) thiolate sites of proteins, from deleterious oxidations resulting from oxidizing environments. Disclosed here is the first well-defined model study for reactions between zinc(II) thiolate complexes and copper(II) complexes. Among all the studied ligands of copper(II), diethyldithiocarbamate (DTC) displays a unique redox-tuning ability that enables copper(II) to resist the reduction by thiols while retaining its ability to oxidize zinc(II) thiolates to form disulfides. This work proves for the first time that it is possible to develop oxidants to discriminate between thiols and zinc(II) thiolates, alluding to a new chemical principle for how oxidants, especially universal anticancer Cu(DTC)(2), might circumvent the intracellular reductive defense around certain zinc(II) thiolate sites of proteins to kill malignant cells.

Four new derivatives of the versatile polyfunctional ligands 3-(pyrazol-1-yl)propanamide (1, = PPA) and 3-(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)-propanamide (2, = Me(2)PPA) have been prepared, in which one of the amide hydrogens on 1 and 2 is formally replaced by alkyl residues. X-Ray diffraction studies revealed that, in contrast to 1 and 2, the N-isopropyl substituted derivatives 3 and 4 form supramolecular hydrogen-bonded chains rather than two-dimensional arrays, and the N-(2-methyl-4-oxypentan-2-yl) (=MOP) substituted compounds 5 and 6 exist as cyclic dimers in the solid state. Reactions of PdCl2(COD) (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) with 2 equiv. of the corresponding ligands 1-6 in all cases afforded trans-PdCl2(L)(2) complexes (7-12). Two novel space craft-like octanuclear Co(II)-silsesquioxane nanocages, {Co-8[(MeSiO2)(4)](2)(dmpz)(8)} (SD/Co8a) and {Co-8[(PhSiO2)(4)](2)(dmpz)(8)} (SD/Co8b) (SD = SunDi; Hdmpz = 3,5-dimethylpyrazole), have been constructed from two similar multidentate silsesquioxane ligands assisted with a pyrazole ligand. Strategies for altering the reaction pathway of reactive intermediates are of significant importance in diversifying organic synthesis. Enol silyl ethers, versatile enolate equivalents, are known to undergo one-electron oxidation to generate the radical cations that spontaneously form electrophilic alpha-carbonyl radicals via elimination of the silyl groups. Here, we demonstrate that close scrutiny of the property of the radical cations as strong C-H acids enables the identification of a catalyst system consisting of an iridium-based photosensitizer and 2,4,6-collidine for the generation of nucleophilic allylic radicals from enol silyl ethers through one-electron oxidation-deprotonation sequence under light irradiation without the desilylation of the radical cation intermediates. The resultant allylic radicals engage in the addition to electron-deficient olefins, establishing the selective allylic C-H alkylation of enol silyl ethers. This strategy is broadly applicable, and the alkylated enol silyl ethers can be transformed into highly functionalized carbonyl compounds by exploiting their common polar reactivity.
