The direct and selective C(sp(3))-H functionalization of cycloalkanes and alkanes is a highly useful process in organic synthesis owing to the low-cost starting materials, the high step and atom economy. Its application to asymmetric catalysis, however, has been scarcely explored. Herein, we disclose our effort toward this goal by incorporation of dual asymmetric photocatalysis by a chiral nickel catalyst and a commercially available organophotocatalyst with a radical relay strategy through sulfur dioxide insertion. Such design leads to the development of three-component asymmetric sulfonylation involving direct functionalization of cycloalkanes, alkanes, toluene derivatives or ethers. The photochemical reaction of a C(sp(3))-H precursor, a SO2 surrogate and a common alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compound proceeds smoothly under mild conditions, delivering a wide range of biologically interesting alpha-C chiral sulfones with high regio- and enantioselectivity (>50 examples, up to >50:1 rr and 95% ee). This method is applicable to late-stage functionalization of bioactive molecules, and provides an appealing access to enantioenriched compounds starting from the abundant hydrocarbon compounds. The direct and selective C(sp(3))-H functionalization of cycloalkanes and alkanes is useful in organic synthesis but its application to asymmetric catalysis has been less explored. Here, the authors demonstrate the incorporation of a dual asymmetric photocatalyst which leads to the development of asymmetric sulfonylation involving direct functionalization of cycloalkanes, alkanes, toluene derivatives or ethers.

Two new homo-dinuclear zinc(II) complexes, bis(mu-pyrazolato-) bis[(formato)(pyrazole)zinc(II)], [{Zn(OCHO)(pzH)}(2)(mu-N2H3C3)(2)] (1) and bis(mu-3,5-dimethylpyrazolato)bis[(formato)(-3,5-dimethylpyrazole) zinc(II)], [{Zn(dmpzH)(OCHO)}(2)(m-N2H7C5)(2)] (2), were synthesized through the reactions of zinc(II) formate dihydrate, Zn(OCHO)(2)center dot 2H(2)O with pyrazole (pzH = C3H4N2) and 3,5-dimethyl-pyrazole (dmpzH = C5H8N2), respectively, in toluene at room temperature. These dinuclear complexes have been characterized using different analytical techniques; elemental and thermogravimetric analyses, IR and H-1-NMR spectroscopies, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and DFT studies. Compound 1 crystallized in the P (1) over bar space group of the triclinic crystal system with unit cell parameters a = 8.205(3) angstrom, b = 8.864(5) angstrom, c = 14.486(7) angstrom, alpha = 104.929(14)degrees, beta = 91.214(11)degrees and gamma = 106.921(8)degrees. Compound 2 crystallized in the P2(1)/c space group of the monoclinic crystal system with cell parameters a = 8.400(3) angstrom, b = 11.020(4) angstrom, c = 14.930(5) angstrom, alpha = gamma = 90 degrees and beta = 106.3(10)degrees. Pseudo-tetrahedral coordination geometries were observed around the zinc(II) centers in both complexes, constructed by one oxygen atom from a formate anion and three nitrogen atoms from one pzH and two pyrazolato in 1 or one dmpzH and two 3,5-dimethylpyrazolato in 2. The bulk of these materials are consolidated by weak and strong N-H center dot center dot center dot O, C-H center dot center dot center dot O, C-N center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi, N-H center dot center dot center dot pi and C-O center dot center dot center dot O intra/intermolecular interactions resulting to zigzag networks containing empty voids. A sequential and general strategy has been successfully developed for the synthesis of spiropyrazolone scaffolds. This intriguing transformation of the asymmetric multicomponent catalysis process was realized with the combination of Michael addition/chlorination/nucleophilic substitution in a one-pot sequence, giving rise to a series of spiropyrazolones with fully substituted cyclopropanes and spiro-dihydrobenzofurans containing continuous stereogenic centers in good yields with excellent stereoselectivities.

In the present work, an attempt is made to establish the correlation between equilibrium constant and stabilization energy [Delta E-SE(AB)] generated from density functional reactivity theory (DFRT). The reactions chosen here are of type A + B (sic) AB (i.e., adduct formation type) between an electron acceptor, A, and an electron donor, B. The representative acceptors are methyltrioxorhenium (MTO) and substituted benzaldehydes whereas donors are 26 mono- and bidentate ligands (having N-donors) and semicarbazide. The trends of experimentally generated equilibrium constant (K) values match with those of Delta E-SE(AB) in most of the cases, both in gas phase as well as in solvent. Justification of this reliable correlation is provided analytically using the expressions of standard Gibbs free energy of reaction (i.e., Delta(r)G(theta)) and the stabilization energy expression generated by DFRT. A further analytical explanation (albeit not very rigorous) is provided through statistical thermodynamics showing how equilibrium constant (K) is related to Delta E-SE(AB) for reactions of the type A + B (sic) AB, where either A or B is a common species.

We report the first asymmetric total synthesis and structural determination of calixanthomycin A. Taking advantage of a modular strategy, a concise approach was developed to assemble the hexacyclic skeleton with both enantiomers of the lactone A ring. Stereoselective glycosylation coupled the angular hexacyclic framework with a monosaccharide fragment to produce calixanthomycin A and its stereoisomers. We have reported the synthesis, characterization, and catalytic applications of amorphous iron nanoparticles (FeNPs) using aqueous leaves extract of renewable natural resourceBoswellia serrataplant. Synthesized FeNPs were stabilized in situ by the addition of aqueous pod extracts ofAcacia concinnaas a biosurfactant (pH 3.11). The structural investigation of biosynthesized nanoparticles was performed using UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, selected area electron diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and BET analysis. The FeNPs were amorphous in nature with average particle size similar to 19 nm and successfully employed as heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of quinoxaline, benzimidazole, and pyrazole derivatives in aqueous medium at ambient conditions. Three novel mixed ligand Zn(II) complexes {complex 1 = [Zn(L1)(2)(bpy)], complex 2 = [Zn(L2)(2)(bPY)], complex 3 = [Zn(L2)(2)(phen)], where bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline} of 4-(4-chlorobenzoyl)-2-(3-chlorophenyl)-5-methyl-2,4-dihydro-3H-pyrazol-3-one (HL1) and 4-(4-chlorobenzoyl)-5-methyl-2-(p-tolyl)-2,4-dihydro-3H-pyrazol-3-one (HL2) were synthesized and characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR, FTIR, TG-DTA, UV-Vis, elemental analysis, molar conductance and single crystal X-ray structure determination. Based on analytical and spectroscopic techniques, all the three Zn(II) complexes were found to have a distorted octahedral geometry. The ligands and the complexes were screened for antimalarial activity against plasmodium falciparum. The zinc(II) complexes showed greater antimalarial activity than their parent ligands. Importance: treatment of dementia in individuals with comorbidities is complex, leading to potentially inappropriate prescribing (PIP). The impact of PIP in this population is unknown. Objective: to estimate the rate of PIP and its effect on adverse health outcomes (AHO). Design: retrospective cohort. Setting: primary care electronic health records linked to hospital discharge data from England. Subjects: 11,175 individuals with dementia aged over 65 years in 2016 and 43,463 age- and sex-matched controls. Methods: Screening Tool of Older Persons’ Prescriptions V2 defined PIP. Logistic regression tested associations with comorbidities at baseline, and survival analyses risk of incident AHO, adjusted for age, gender, deprivation and 14 comorbidities. Results: the dementia group had increased risk of PIP (73% prevalence; odds ratio [OR]: 1.92; confidence interval [CI]: 83-103%; P < 0.01) after adjusting for comorbidities. Most frequent PIP criteria were related to anti-cholinergic drugs and therapeutic duplication. Risk of PIP was higher in patients also diagnosed with coronary-heart disease (odds OR: 2.17; CI: 1.91-2.46; P < 0.01), severe mental illness (OR: 2.09; CI: 1.62-2.70; P < 0.01); and depression (OR: 1.81; CI: 1.62-2.01; P < 0.01). During follow-up (1 year), PIP was associated with increased all-cause mortality (hazard ratio: 1.14; CI: 1.021.26; P < 0.02), skin ulcer and pressure sores (hazard ratio: 1.66; CI: 1.12-2.46; P< 0.01), falls (hazard ratio: 1.37; CI: 1.15-1.63; P < 0.01), anaemia (hazard ratio: 1.61; CI: 1.10-2.38; P < 0.02) and osteoporosis (hazard ratio: 1.62; CI: 1.022.57; P < 0.04). In this letter, an efficient one-pot asymmetric sequential reaction is achieved by organo/transition metal relay catalysis in constructing two consecutive C-C bonds, which involves enantioselective amino squaramide catalytic Mannich-type addition of pyrazolones to isatin-derived ketimines and a subsequent palladium catalyzed diastereoselective allylic alkylation of pyrazolones with allylic acetates. An array of novel pyrazolone-aminooxindole-propylene structural motifs are obtained in a high level of yield and with excellent enantio- and diastereoselectivity (up to 95% yield, >20:1 dr, >99% ee). This methodology features the formation of vicinal quarternary carbon-stereocenters, and the second all-carbon tetrasubstituted stereogenic center is induced by joint action of the achiral palladium catalysis and the chiral environment generated from the Mannich step.
