An enantioselective Mannich reaction between 3-fluorooxindoles and pyrazolinone ketimines has been developed for the construction of amino-pyrazolone-oxindoles containing stereogenic C-F units. Based on this new protocol that allows for the generation of two adjacent tetrasubstituted stereocenters, a variety of structurally diverse fluorinated amino-pyrazolone-oxindoles were obtained in good to excellent yields with excellent diastereoselectivities and enantioselectivities (up to 98% yield, >20 : 1 dr and >99% ee). Here in, the effects of FeSiAl particle size on the dielectric and microwave absorption properties of FeSiAl/Al2O3 composites were studied. FeSiAl/Al2O3 composites containing 18-25 mu m, 25-48 mu m, and 48-75 mu m FeSiAl particles were prepared by hot-pressed sintering based on uniformly mixed FeSiAl and Al2O3 powders. Results show that the real permittivity and the imaginary permittivity are significantly promoted with increasing FeSiAl particle size, which is ascribed to the enhanced interfacial polarization and conductance loss. In addition, the favorable matching impedance and suitable attenuation coefficient enabled the composite containing 25-48 mu m FeSiAl powder to show a minimum reflection loss of -34.4 dB at 11.7 GHz and an effective absorption bandwidth (<-10 dB) of 1.4 GHz in 11.0-12.4 GHz, when the thickness is 1.1 mm. By adjusting the thickness to 1.4 mm, the effective absorption bandwidth of the composite reaches a maximum value of 2.0 GHz in the 8.3-10.3 GHz range, indicating tunable, strong, and highly efficient microwave absorption performance. This study provides a phenomenological method to describe the exponential growth, saturation, and decay of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) deaths and infections via a Monte Carlo approach. The calculations connect Gompertz-type trial distributions of infected people per day with the distribution of deaths adopting two gamma distributions to account for the elapsed time that encompass the incubation and symptom onset to death periods. The analyses include death data from the USA, Brazil, Mexico, the United Kingdom (UK), India, and Russia, which comprise the four countries with the highest number of deaths and the four countries with the highest number of confirmed cases, as of August 07, 2020, according to theWorld Health Organization webpage. The Gompertz functions were fitted to the data of weekly averaged confirmed deaths per day by mapping the chi(2) values. The uncertainties, variances, and covariances of the model parameters were calculated by propagation, taking into account the standard errors of the data for each epidemiological week. The fitted functions for the average deaths per day for the USA and India have an upward trend, with the former having a higher growth rate and quite huge uncertainties. For Mexico, the UK, and Russia, the fits are consistent with a downward-sloping pattern. For Brazil we found a subtle trend down but with significant uncertainties. The USA, UK, and India data showed first peaks with higher growth rates compared with the second ones (4.2, 2.2, and 3.5 times higher, respectively), demonstrating the benefits of nonpharmacological interventions of sanitary measures and social distance flattening the secondary peaks of the pandemic. For the case of the USA, however, a third peak seems quite plausible, most likely related with the recent relaxation policies. Brazil’s data are satisfactorily described by two highly overlapped Gompertz functions with similar growth rates, suggesting a two-step process for the pandemic spreading. For the cases of Mexico and Russia single peaks with smoother slopes fitted the data satisfactorily. The 95% confidence intervals for the total number of deaths (x10(3)) predicted by the model for August 31, 2020, are 160 to 220, 110 to 130, 59 to 62, 41.3 to 41.4, 54 to 63, and 16.0 to 16.7 for the USA, Brazil, Mexico, the UK, India, and Russia, respectively. Our estimates for the point prevalences of infections are compared with some preliminary data from serological studies and/or model calculations focused on the USA, Brazil, and UK scenarios. The point prevalences and 95% confidence intervals for August 1, 2020, were estimated to be 5.7 (3.9-7.5)%, 8.9 (7.4-10.3)%, 9.3 (8.3-10.3)%, 5.7 (4.5-6.9)%, 0.9 (0.8-1.0%), and 1.2 (1.0-1.3)% for the USA, Brazil, Mexico, the UK, India, and Russia, respectively. The method represents an effective few-parameter framework to estimate the line shape of the infection curves and the uncertainties of the relevant parameters based on the actual death data of a pandemic.

We report the promoting effect of graphitic carbon nitride in Cu-catalyzed N-arylation. The abundance of pyridinic coordination sites in this host permits the adsorption of copper iodide from the reaction medium. The key to achieving high activity is to confine active Cu species on the surface, which is accomplished by introducing atomically dispersed metal dopants to block diffusion into the bulk of the carrier. The alternative route of incorporating metal during the synthesis of graphitic carbon nitride is ineffective as Cu is thermodynamically more stable in inactive subsurface positions. A combination of X-ray absorption, X-ray photoelectron, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, density functional theory, and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations is employed to determine the location and associated geometry as well as the electronic structure of metal centers. N-Arylation activity correlates to the surface coverage by copper, which varies during the reaction due to an interplay between site formation via adsorption from the reaction medium and deactivation by diffusion into the bulk of the material, and is highest when an Fe dopant is used to hinder such movement through the lattice.

Reported here is the Pd-catalyzed C-N coupling of hydrazine with (hetero)aryl chlorides and bromides to form aryl hydrazines with catalyst loadings as low as 100 ppm of Pd and KOH as base. Mechanistic studies revealed two catalyst resting states: an arylpalladium(II) hydroxide and arylpalladium(II) chloride. These compounds are present in two interconnected catalytic cycles and react with hydrazine and base or hydrazine alone to give the product. The selectivity of the hydroxide complex with hydrazine to form aryl over diaryl hydrazine was lower than that of the chloride complex, as well as the catalytic reaction. In contrast, the selectivity of the chloride complex closely matched that of the catalytic reaction, indicating that the aryl hydrazine is derived from this complex. Kinetic studies showed that the coupling process occurs by rate-limiting deprotonation of a hydrazine-bound arylpalladium(II) chloride complex to give an arylpalladium(II) hydrazido complex.

The current work investigates the performance of a real-time scan conversion algorithm for generating a 2-D ultrasound image from a laterally scanned single-element ultrasound transducer, which has applications in point-of-care devices such as for skin imaging. The algorithm employs a fixed calibration curve to update a predefined image grid in real time. Simulations showed that the calibration curve (with a maximum of 1) is robust to changes in scatterer concentration (8.3 x 10(-3) mean absolute error), signal to noise ratio (1.0 x 10(-3) mean absolute error for -5 dB SNR), and can be accurately predicted from a small number (31) of point scatterers (6.9 x 10(-3) mean absolute error). Good agreement was also found between the calibration curves obtained from simulated and experimental data (1.19 x 10(-2) mean absolute error). The scan conversion algorithm was validated by evaluation of the position estimation errors on both simulations and experiments. Clinical images of skin lesions (N = 20) demonstrate the feasibility of the algorithm for real, non-homogeneous tissue. Use of a fixed calibration curve compared to an adaptive calibration curve gave similar accuracies in the scanning step size range of 150-350 mu m (with an average overlap of the accuracy ranges of 92.94% for simulations and 42.83% for experiments), and a 350-fold improvement in computation time.

Two novel space craft-like octanuclear Co(II)-silsesquioxane nanocages, {Co-8[(MeSiO2)(4)](2)(dmpz)(8)} (SD/Co8a) and {Co-8[(PhSiO2)(4)](2)(dmpz)(8)} (SD/Co8b) (SD = SunDi; Hdmpz = 3,5-dimethylpyrazole), have been constructed from two similar multidentate silsesquioxane ligands assisted with a pyrazole ligand. The Cob skeleton consists of eight tetrahedral Co(II) ions arranged in a ring and is further capped by two (MeSiO2)(4) ligands up and down. The auxiliary dmpz(-) ligands seal the ring finally. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry revealed SD/Co8a and SD/Co8b are highly stable in CH2Cl2. Magnetic analysis implies that SD/Co8a announces antiferromagnetic interactions between Co(II) ions. Moreover, both of them display good homogeneous catalytic activity for hydroboration of ketones in the presence of pinacolborane under mild conditions.
