A novel bispyrazole-based expanded cryptand was synthesized via Schiff base condensation reaction having an internal cavity of 160 angstrom(3) with a hydrophobic nature. The cryptand features electron-rich multiple pyrazole rings for enhanced weak noncovalent interactions with the guest molecules. The host-guest capabilities of the cryptand were investigated for encapsulation of the most inactive halogen bond donor molecules (having small sigma-hole size), namely, CH2Cl2, CHCl3, CCl4, C2HCl3, C2H4Cl2, and C2H4Br2. Analysis of crystal structures clearly revealed that halogen bonding (C-Cl/Br center dot center dot center dot pi (pyrazole)) and hydrogen bonding (C-H center dot center dot center dot pi(pyrazole)) interactions played a key role in stabilizing the halogenated guests inside the hydrophobic cavity of cryptand. At the same time, the cage is efficiently able to exclude hydrophilic solvent molecules, like, water and methanol, suggesting the hydrophobic nature of the cavity. Due to the comparably large sigma-hole in C2H4Br2, it showed the strongest halogen bonding interaction with the host cryptand, while weakest interaction was found for the CH2Cl2 guest which has the smallest size sigma-hole. Furthermore, the cryptand is able to adjust its central cavity according to the size of the guest. The biggest cavity size was found for the C2H4Br2 guest, while smallest size was found for the CH2Cl2 guest molecule. This study sheds more light on the interaction of halogenated solvents via halogen and hydrogen bonding, which is critical in understanding and controlling chemical reactions where solvent effects play an important role.

The oxidative deamination of N-nitroso N-acetylneuraminic acid (NeuAc) derivatives is a useful reaction for the formation of 5-desamino-5-hydroxy NeuAc derivatives and their stereoisomers. We demonstrated previously that replacement of the classical nucleophile in these reactions, acetic acid, by phenols resulted in a novel double displacement process with substitution of the acetoxy group at the 4-position taking place in addition to that of the 5-acetamido group, for which we postulated a mechanism centered on the formation of a highly reactive vinyl diazonium ion. We now extend these studies to encompass the use of hydroxylaminebased systems and weakly basic amines as nucleophile. We find that the nature of the product depends significantly on the pKa of the nucleophile, with the more acidic species typically affording only substitution at the 5-position, while the less acidic species give mixtures of elimination products and disubstitution products. The use of aniline as nucleophile is of particular note as it affords a novel aziridine spanning positions 4- and 5- of the neuraminic acid skeleton.

Based on the agrochemical structure of anthranilic diamides, fourteen novel N-substittitedphenyl-2-pyrazolylnicotinamides were conveniently synthesized with 2-chloro-3-cyanopyridine and 4-bromopyrazole or 3,5-dimethylpyrazole as starting materials, via an acyl transposing design strategy. Their structures were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS. The preliminary bioassay tests indicated that most of these compounds exhibited obvious insecticidal activity at the test concentration of 200 mg/L, among which N-(4-chloro-2-(ethylcarbamoyl)-6-methylphenyl)-2-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)nicotinamide (II) possessed a 70% mortality rate against Mythimna separata Walker: some of the compounds displayed favorable fungicidal activities at 50 mg/L towards Physalospora piricola and Alternaria solani Sorauer, especially 2-(4-bromo-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-N-(2-(cyclopropylcarbamoyl)-4-iodo-6-methylphenyl)nicotinamide (If) and 2-(4-bromo-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-N-(4-chloro-2-(ethylcarbamoyl)-6-methylphenyl)nicotinamide (Ih) against Physalospora piricola, and 2-(4-bromo-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-N-(4-chloro-2-(propylcarbamoyl)phenyl)nicotinamide (Id) against Alternaria solani Sorauer had growth inhibitory rates of 62.9%, 54.3% and 54.5%, respectively. These research results provide important reference for the further study of novel 2-pyrazolylnicotinamide derivatives.

Herein we report the first Ni(II)-catalysed transfer hydrogenation of quinolines using ammonia borane (AB) as hydrogen (H-2) source. An in situ generated Ni(II)-bis(pyrazolyl)pyridine pre-catalyst could hydrogenate quinoline and its derivatives in excellent yields of up to 90% at 25 degrees C in 30 minutes. Spectroscopic studies revealed that a Ni(II)-hydride is responsible for the transfer hydrogenation of quinoline to 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline via a 1,4-dihydroquinoline intermediate.

Comparison of various organic compounds such as glycols, amines and alkanolamines as organocatalysts in amidation of fatty acid methyl esters with 3-(dimethylamino)-1-propylamine was made for the first time. It was experimentally detected that catalysts containing OH-groups (alcohols, glycols, glycerol and aminoalcohols) influence the reaction rate. Moreover, catalytic effect is depending on the catalysts geometry significantly. 1,5-diols (e. g. diethylene glycol and diethanolamine) were found to accelerate the reaction more than other OH-groups containing additives. It was supposed, that this catalytic effect is caused by specific associative interactions between reactants and 1,5-diols, what was confirmed by quantum mechanics calculations. Catalysts concentration effects on the reaction rate were also investigated.

In the present work, an attempt is made to establish the correlation between equilibrium constant and stabilization energy [Delta E-SE(AB)] generated from density functional reactivity theory (DFRT). The reactions chosen here are of type A + B (sic) AB (i.e., adduct formation type) between an electron acceptor, A, and an electron donor, B. The representative acceptors are methyltrioxorhenium (MTO) and substituted benzaldehydes whereas donors are 26 mono- and bidentate ligands (having N-donors) and semicarbazide. The trends of experimentally generated equilibrium constant (K) values match with those of Delta E-SE(AB) in most of the cases, both in gas phase as well as in solvent. Justification of this reliable correlation is provided analytically using the expressions of standard Gibbs free energy of reaction (i.e., Delta(r)G(theta)) and the stabilization energy expression generated by DFRT. A further analytical explanation (albeit not very rigorous) is provided through statistical thermodynamics showing how equilibrium constant (K) is related to Delta E-SE(AB) for reactions of the type A + B (sic) AB, where either A or B is a common species.

Two new coordination compounds viz. [Ni(2,6-PDC)(Hdmpz)(H2O)(2)]center dot H2O (1) and [Zn(3-CNpy)(2)Cl-2] (2) (2,6-PDC = 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate, Hdmpz = 3,5-dimethylpyrazole, 3-CNpy = 3-cyanopyridine) have been synthesized and characterized using elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, electronic, infrared spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Crystal structure analyses reveal the presence of supramolecular assemblies involving interesting dimers with unconventional contacts in the compounds. DFT (Density Functional Theory) calculations on the supramolecular dimers in the crystal structure of 1 reveal that the sum of contributions of anion-pi, pi-pi and other long range interactions due to the approximation of the bulk monomers is energetically significant. Molecular Electrostatic Potential (MEP) surface and Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) analyses on the interesting supramolecular dimers of the crystal structures of 2 reveal the presence of unconventional anion center dot center dot center dot pi contacts involving coordinated chlorido ligands and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi(nitrile) interactions involving the pi-system of the nitrile moiety of 3-cyanopyridine. Remarkably, Atoms in Molecules analysis also confirms the existence of energetically significant unconventional anti-parallel nitrile center dot center dot center dot nitrile interaction in the crystal structure of 2. Cell cytotoxicity of the compounds performed in Dalton’s lymphoma (DL) malignant cancer cell line showed effective potency with negligible cytotoxicity in normal cells (similar to 12%). It is interesting that compound 1has excellent cytotoxic potency with IC50 closer to cisplatin and can bind different biological targets with similar signalling pathways. A series of new 9,9-diethylfluorenes consisting of three side-arms each bearing a heterocyclic, bis(carboxymethyl)amino, bis(carbamoylmethyl)amino, bis(ethoxycarbonylmethyl)amino or an amino group were prepared on the basis of 2,4,7-tris(bromomethyl)-9,9-diethylfluorene. Antibacterial properties of microencapsulated Lactobacillus plantarum cell-free supernatant (CFS) in combinations with aqueous or ethanolic propolis extract at doses of 1% against fish spoilage bacteria were investigated. Microencapsulated samples contained more than 17 compounds, of which furyl alcohol, acetic acid, maltol, and 2(5H) furanon were identified as common compounds. The effects of microencapsulated CFS from L. plantarum in combination with or without propolis extracts on the fish spoilage bacteria varied according to the bacterial species. Among the fish spoilage bacteria, the highest antimicrobial activity of samples was observed against P. damselae with >15.5 mm inhibition diameter zone. Pure and microencapsulated CFS from L. plantarum showed the lowest antimicrobial effects on P. mirabilis with a corresponding inhibition diameter zone of 8.33 and 8.00 mm. Microencapsulated CFS from L. plantarum in combination with aqueous propolis extract had 25 mg/ml of MIC and 50 mg/ml of MBC on all bacteria although the bactericidal effect of microencapsulated samples in combination with ethanolic propolis extract occurred at a level of above 50 mg/ml. The study results revealed that co-microencapsulation of CFS obtained from L. plantarum with propolis extract, especially its aqueous extract, could be potentially used as antimicrobial agents to overcome microbial growth in foods.
